Automation PSA: Upgrade your AVEVA PI System!

Just because a product still functions doesn’t mean it couldn’t benefit from an update, especially when we’re talking automation technology and control system integration – fields that are anything but static. The old “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” philosophy with the AVEVA PI System has proven not only a security risk but also results in the user’s inability to leverage the full functionality of the latest PI Software capabilities, especially where the older versions of the software are installed and presently in use.   6 Reasons to Upgrade to the Latest Versions of AVEVA PI System  The AVEVA PI System has evolved considerably over time with a focus on security, customer feedback, and market requirements. With the integration of OSIsoft’s IP, the new capabilities of the AVEVA PI have a lot to offer: 1. Heightened Security  By upgrading to the latest versions of the PI Software Suite can help ensure the application of the latest necessary security fixes to the core software, enabling active threat deterrence. In addition, the latest version of the PI software suite enables industries to leverage the most current Windows and network security features while providing access to their users based on current standards, best practices, and industry guidelines. When upgraded, your automation system has reduced potential cyber and internal threats while preserving the integrity of your data in the PI System.  2. AVEVA PI Technical Support  AVEVA has transformed its skill set to align with the latest versions of the PI Software.  With older versions, one can anticipate delayed response time on “time and data-sensitive” issues due to a lack of on-hand technical expertise and solutions to resolve those technical issues.    Furthermore, with changes in user requirements and technological development, many of the current PI tools are either no longer available, supported or are in the … Continued

Utilizing the AVEVA PI System for a Large Pharmaceutical Client

The generation, maintenance and use of historical process data is always an important part of the discussion in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector where transparency and traceability throughout the automation system is key. It affects things such as regulatory compliance, process optimization, business strategy, and overall viability in the marketplace.  To enhance this aspect of their business, one of our clients chose to leverage the AVEVA PI Software Suite in their control system retrofit. The AVEVA PI system is one of the leaders in the industry and provides various architecture and licensing options to accommodate customers’ needs.  The AVEVA PI is a product of industry collaboration and incorporates OSISoft’s data management prowess with AVEVA’s engineering expertise. Utilizing this powerful automation platform enhances process visibility, decision-making, and optimization throughout the industrial value chain. The functionality of the AVEVA PI system can be broken down into the following subsections: collecting data, storing data, contextualizing data, and visualizing/accessing data. Redundant Data Collection Collecting data is the process of taking data from a source and sending it along the pipeline to be stored. In this use case, the data sources are PLCs and relational databases. The PI System uses PI Interfaces and Connectors to perform the data collection. AVEVA offers over 450 interfaces, allowing for collection from a vast array of data sources. In the past, the client had issues with its legacy data collection; data gaps and outages would occur too frequently. PI Interfaces facilitate data collection and allow for redundancy to ensure that there is not a single point of failure in the system.   In addition to the available redundancy, PI interfaces also provide buffering: if the archive itself is unavailable, the interface will store data locally until the archive is available again. The buffered data is then forwarded to the archive, … Continued

How Our Automation Training Boot Camp Transforms Our Engineers

While the Marines require 13 weeks of rigorous basic training in Paris Island, and the Army and Navy demand 10 and 8 weeks respectively, E Tech Group offers 4 weeks of Automation Boot Camp to prepare our recruits to become the best of the best in automation engineering.  We like to think our Automation Boot Camp is just as transformative for our recruits, but without the screaming in their face and the exhaustive overnight hikes through the desert. It also produces a more competent and more confident automation engineer or project manager ready to take on the Life Science Industry.  A Control Systems Integrator Focused on Continued Education For over 30 years now, we have refined and improved our automation training program into 26 online modules within the company portal. These modules are followed by both recent engineering graduates and experienced engineers learning the peculiarities of the Life Science Industry, and contain embedded quizzes that help them soak in the information. The self-paced program includes topics like: The technical modules our new recruits will complete throughout the course of Automation Bootcamp include: This provides our new automation engineers and future project managers with well-rounded background information and template starting points that will ease life considerably once assigned to a project. Soft skills also include customer relations, team work communication, appropriate documentation of meetings, and the proper follow up of customer needs.  Applied Life Sciences Automation Training: Bringing it Into the Real World With the same urgency that the Marines require 3 weeks of intensive, real life target practice with an M16 rifle and live ammunition, E Tech Group provides each recruit with a real batching project with a live PLC (ControlLogix or Siemens S7) and Operator Interface (Wonderware, Factory Talk, WINCC, or Ignition).  As a final hurdle, each recruit demonstrates the functionality of their … Continued
